Creating a new teacher welcome basket is such a fun way to welcome staff to your school! And the good news is that they can be fairly inexpensive – and fun – to make. They’re perfect for handing out at new teacher orientation or to leave as a surprise in their classrooms! Let’s dig into some of my favorite ideas for how to make a new teacher gift basket.
Getting Started
Pick a container of your choice. I love sturdy plastic bins and wire baskets that can be repurposed for classroom organization.
Then make a list and hit up Amazon, Target, and the Dollar Store. And don’t forget to check with your office staff for basic supplies they can contribute like pens and paper clips!
Fill the basket and add a cute nametag or welcome note. Find some here!
Now let’s check out some new teacher must-haves to put in the baskets…

Office Supplies
Hopefully, your school will provide basic office supplies. Here are some fun extras you might include:
- dry-erase markers
- flair pens
- ink gel pens
- lined sticky notes
- colorful printer paper and cardstock
- printable magnetic sheets
Classroom Decor
Since setting up the classroom will be at the top of the new teacher’s list, I like to add some items that will help with the process.
- stapler
- magnetic staple remover
- double-sided tape
- dry-erase magnets
- velcro dots
- magnetic stickers
Personal Items
Personal “emergency” items are a must for new teacher welcome baskets!
- chapstick
- hand lotion
- Tide pen
- Motrin or Tylenol
- chocolate or other candy
- protein bar or other snacks
- coffee shop gift card
- Teachers Pay Teachers gift card
Swag
Including personalized and/or school swag is an awesome way to help someone feel like part of the school family! Your office staff and PTA may even have some items from previous years.
- lanyard
- shirt
- mug or tumbler
- water bottle
- clipboard
- keychain
- whistle
Bonus Items
If you want to include a slightly bigger item, here are some good options:
- laminator
- paper cutter
- label maker
- pencil sharpener
- sticky chart paper
I’d also make sure the new teachers at your school receive disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer, and a box of tissues – but you might not want them in the cute basket!
Welcome baskets are so great to gift first-year teachers and staff who are new to your school.
